6/9/2023 0 Comments Life after death sister![]() This piece was published more than twenty years ago, in 1999, and it is the second work of the author to be put on the shelves. ![]() I will be starting this article by introducing you to one of the best selling books by Sister Souljah, The Coldest Winter Ever. The experiences she gathered as well as her wide array of knowledge on societal issues made her a respectable voice even before she graduated. She frequently traveled overseas during her college years to see the world as it is. She also won a scholarship for the Advanced Summer Program of Cornell University after she won an oratory Contest. A Respectable VoiceĪfter graduating high school, she attended Rutgers University to study American History along with African Studies. There, she attended Dwight Morrow High School and figured out at a young age that the education system preferred the white side of their history. When she was around ten years old, she and her family moved to the suburbs of Englewood in New Jersey which also hosted many other African-American artists such as Eddie Murphy and Regina Belle. The author was born in the Bronx, New York, and lived there until she was ten years of age. ![]() She also has some interesting past with Bill Clinton which led to her symbolizing a phenomenon in politics known as the “Sister Souljah Moment”. She is a very well known activist and she has been defending the rights of African-Americans for almost forty years. Sister Souljah, whose birth name is Lisa Williamson, is an American writer of urban fiction but I should say by now that she is more than just an author. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments Allah is not obliged![]() ![]() However, in the words of the author (or translator), let’s start from the start.īirahima is a child who is both protected and doomed by circumstance having being born to a disadvantaged family in an already disadvantaged society he is seemingly doomed from the onset. As the names of the dictionaries suggest the book was originally written in French before being translated to English by a man known as Frank Wynne. He is quick with a curse word and knows it all t 3 dictionaries thanks to his dictionaries The Larousse, The Petit Robert, The Glossary of French Lexical Particularities in Black Africa and Harrap’s. The story is told through the eyes of Birahima, a ten year old child soldier with a tongue that would make even the hardest of sailors cringe. A story that tells of dictators, coup de tats, medicine men (grigrimen), death and soldiers in such a funny quick thinking smooth way that bit just keeps you asking for more and more. ![]() Set in central Africa this is a ten year olds account as a child soldier and all the stuff he has been through and seen. I really should, because when a book starts with an opening line as profound, as powerful as that you know you are in for a ride and a half. “The full, final and complete title of my bullshit story is: Allah is not obliged to be fair about all the things he does here on earth.” I believe I should just end the review there for this week. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments Book the fifth witness![]() ![]() Give us time to work up a long-range plan. The levity mixes well with the overwhelming darkness of the overall narrative. Whether he is offering Peter Quill/ Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) philosophical advice or being rude as a guest in someone’s home, the man never changes, and that is not a bad thing either. Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) still does not know any better, and it is no facade that has always been his temperament. The interaction between his characters feels so genuine and meaningful that you can already feel how much the Guardians have bonded as a family. To begin, Gunn allows the comedy to be dispersed naturally within the two-and-a-half hours. While that may cause divisive discourse amongst fans, viewers, and casual moviegoers alike, the entirety of the narrative brings a satisfactory collection of cinematic elements, along with some huge themes to gain out of it. ![]() ![]() Yet, this time around, Volume 3 has in store for itself a longer runtime. ![]() Coming off of the first film and its 2017 sequel, the writer-director delivers the final story that has all the levity, tears, and astonishing creativity as the first two entries. Gunn ups the ante one last time for the final installment of the Guardians trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it's too late. The more you look at the pictures the more you find hidden. I think the term that would be used to describes them is postmodern, the surreal way they weave popular works of art, distort the landscape and portray adult and child-like themes is stunning. The best parts of this story are the illustrations. Oh and by the way the main characters are all gorillas, although the story appears to be intensely human. Some of the language and opinions conveyed could be quite tricky to explain but could also provoke some interesting conversations. ![]() It also explores quite adult issues such as unemployment in a simplistic way. ![]() ![]() Both of the children and the parents of the children, are given voices and although on the surface the story appears simple it is actually quite complex as it explores each of the character's individual feelings and personalities. It includes four separate narrative voices, which are emphasised by each having an individual font and is based around an outing to the park. 'Voices in the park' by Anthony Browne is a picture book with a difference. ![]() 6/8/2023 0 Comments Women of the word study guide![]() ![]() “I found Women of the Word to be so practical in the way it demystifies serious Bible study. ![]() She is the author of Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds.
